Imagine the Universe was a cake.
When you make this cake you are a bit haphazard with using yeast, and do not measure the water volume, and are casual with the sugar. When you open the oven, set to a random temperature, there is not risen cake, just a burned biscuit.
Imagine the Universe was a single radio station
To find it you have to be on the right channel. And then you need to turn the dial just the correct amount. Too much and you get static. Too little and you get static. Just right and you can hear your station; but this is one tiny point of clarity in a huge amount of scratchy noise.
The finely tuned Universe
Physicists and cosmologists now generally agree that we can accurately describe our universe as fine tuned for life. Even the most dyed in the wool atheist materialistic scientists accept this truth.
"A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question.”
Fred Hoyle - British astrophysicist
"We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures.. .. If the Universe had not been made with the most exacting precision we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created for man to live in.”
John O'Keefe - an astronomer working at NASA
Our Elegant Universe
We remember from our science education in school, that there are such things as constants. Water boils at 100 degrees Centigrade (by definition - if it is at sea level). It freezes at 0 degrees Centigrade (by definition). But, and this is crucial, water is most dense at 4 degrees Centigrade (found by observation) and this is one reason that you can skate in winter and also that ice cubes float!
This behaviour of water is one quirk that has allowed (or at least facilitated) the development of life on Earth.
But there are many more. We will list a few here to make the point.
Atheists are Apoplectic
Maybe this heading is a little hyperbolic, Let's say materialistic scientists are exercised to show – with no room for doubt – that of course the fact (and they do not dispute the facts) our universe is remarkably fine tuned to produce life, does not mean their is an Intelligence involved in any way. It is still just chance.
It is worth noting, in passing, that not all scientists are atheist. As Jim Holt pointed out in an article in the Wall Street Journal:
""I was reminded of this a few months ago when I saw a survey in the journal Nature. It revealed that 40% of American physicists, biologists and mathematicians believe in God … “
Jim Holt - Wall Street Journal 1997
He goes on to say that by 'God' they meant a unitary Divine Being, not some blind 'Cosmological Force'.
The apoplexy of the materialists is understandable, in the view of this writer, as the good ship Chance Events that they have happily sailed in for about 100 years, has now been holed below the waterline. The Universe certainly looks like it has an Intelligence within and before it, and that proposition is a potential death blow to the consensus reality held with all the vigour of a religion, by its strongest adherents.
So what, if the Universe is perfectly tuned?
Well, it is a big "so what". It requires an explanation. We find we are alive in something entirely remarkable, a universe that appears to be rigged entirely so life would develop.
Now this is a huge problem for the consensus reality. And there is an enormous academic battle under way to ensure that this viewpoint, and the potential implications, does not get a serious foothold in the corridors of university science. Too many reputations and too many textbooks are at stake. The high priests of Scientism are fighting back.
The idea of a 'fine-tuned universe' is not in itself a support for crude Creationism. It does not of itself suggest the involvement of a deity. If you search with the term 'fine tuned universe' on Youtube, you will find many interesting and thoughtful debates. ranging from a strong suggestion that there is indeed a God; a suggestion that there is an Anthropic Principle - a Intelligence wishing to Know Itself through self-aware humankind; and version of the multiverse theory, suggesting we lucked out by being alive in the one universe amongst an infinite number of dead and sterile ones.
"But why does our universe possess a perfect symmetry with respect to charge but a slight asymmetry with respect to matter and antimatter? Nobody knows! If the situation was reversed and our universe was born with zero protons, but with a net excess of charge, the immense repulsive action of the electromagnetic force would prevent matter present from collapsing into anything resembling stars and galaxies.”
Geraint F. Lewis, astrophysicist
The why question is important. It suggests that one of the theories, namely Intelligent Design, should at least be considered as having intellectual credibility.
