The Odyssey is one of the world's greatest works of literature.
It can also be seen as Homer's remarkable account of the return in consciousness to the True Home of the Soul.
We will consider the symbolic meaning of all the main elements of the story - why it starts with Athena, what is meant by Odysseus's son Telemachus, the role of the various monsters from the Cyclops Polyphemus to the dread power of Scylla and Charybdis. We will also consider the role of the two goddesses Circe and Calypso, who keep Odysseus enthralled before he can escape to the beautiful princess Nausicaa and tell his tale to the good people of Phaeacia.
Brief readings from The Odyssey will be given in both Greek and English.
